Our Story and Vision

Rewind seven years and Annie and Tristan’s note books were filled with nonprofit name ideas (we were almost called the Andros Marine Lab!), board member selections, 501(c)(3) paperwork, logo designs and so much more. They took a great risk leaving the known and familiar and ventured boldly into their hopes and dreams of maybe one day setting up a research facility of their own.

Fast forward to 2025 and you’ll find them in the early stages of creating their dream research station on a newly purchased piece of land on Andros Island, The Bahamas. There are currently thirteen buildings, all of which are unstable in their current condition and the five-acre plot is overgrown with some hazardous areas and some in need of careful salvage. We are excited to repair and nurture this project and believe by 2027 we’ll have our first working facility.

Our vision is to create a welcoming and inclusive facility, a space for students to learn and grow, and for our educational outreach and research to make a meaningful difference in the name of conservation.

research

Our published research focuses on misunderstood and threatened marine animals, and we would like to take this opportunity to highlight a few of the imperiled species we work with: Globally Critically Endangered smalltooth sawfish, Vulnerable silky sharks, and Critically Endangered great and scalloped hammerheads.

With unrelenting pressures from overfishing, bycatch, and illegal harvest the global populations of many of these animals have experienced severe declines, and although our projects are well underway, progress is challenging and recovery is decades away. We’re in desperate need of your support to accomplish even more comprehensive and impactful research. To learn more about our research, please visit our main website, www.savingtheblue.org.

Outreach and Education

We regularly provide creative and educational opportunities to the public, including local marine students and to the international community. In addition, each year we sponsor a number of minority groups, youth, service members, and veterans and their families. We hold local outreach dinners and events and frequently visit schools to teach the next generation about green living, reusable alternatives, and environmentally friendly choices. Over the last few years we have written, published and gifted over 4,500 books to the young children, cleaned countless beaches and offered many sponsorship opportunities.
